Crafting Christmas

At my house we celebrate Christmas and every year it seems like this holiday becomes more and more expensive. I thought for sure that I was going to head out and buy all my presents on Black Friday or Cyber Monday in order to save big bucks, but in the end spending way more then necessary just because its on sale. I ended up doing nothing either day. I have no presents yet and Christmas is just about 3 weeks away. By now I would have everything hidden away to set out on the big day.

This year is different for me and I have decided to go another route. Instead of buying toys that get played with a few times and then get lost in the mess of a bedroom or playroom, I thought it would be fun and very creative to make some awesome gifts for the kids. Here are a few ideas to get the creative ideas flowing.

                                                           sock monkey pillow pal

What's great about some of these crafts is that if you check out the link, it will give you an age range that the gift is appropriate for and a list of all the supplies needed for that project.

Here are a couple inspirations I got from Mom's Crafty Space:

Hopefully this gives you a few more ideas off the beaten path. I think homemade gifts are amazing and they teach kids that you don't need all the flashy, expensive toys to have fun!

Money Talks Part II - Best 4 Credit Cards to Use

Part I was about savings, Part II is about getting something back!  We have standard credit cards from our bank but it's time to start using one of these cards that you actually get something out of.  My big issue was NOT paying an annual fee either.  These were the best 4 that I found and now I just have to decide if I want rewards for shopping, travel or cash back.  Tis the season for shopping - I'm going to get rewarded for what I spend!

If Target is right down the street from your house (we spend a ridiculous amount there):
Target "Red Card" Credit Card (or new Target Debit Card)

  • No Annual Fee
  • 5% back on all purchases
  • free shipping on .com
  • extra 30 days on returns
  • 22.9% Interest

If you are looking for straight up cash back:

Chase Freedom Cash Back Credit Card

  • No Annual Fee
  • Unlimited 1% cash back on all purchases (no limit)
  • 5% cash back on select purchases (these change on a quarterly basis)
  • 22.9% Interest

If you are an avid traveler (my Mom uses this one and loves it):

Capital One VentureOne Credit Card

  • No Annual Fee
  • 1.25 Miles per every dollar you spend (no limit and no expiration)
  • Redeem for Airline tickets, hotels, rental cars
  • Fly any airline with no blackout dates
  • 19.9% Interest

If you are a shopper:

Citi Thank You Credit Card

  • No Annual Fee
  • 1 Thank You point for every $1 you spend on purchases (no limit)
  • Redeem for merchandise, travel rewards, gift cards, cash and more
  • 22.9% Interest
Be sure to check out part one of this money talks series on 4 things to do right now.

Cheesecake Stuffed Strawberries

At every family get together each one of us is typically asked to bring a specific food item to contribute to the event.  This Thanksgiving Heidi got asked for her famous green bean casserole, Jessica was asked to do her annual banana cream pies, cheesy potatoes, and sweet potatoes, and me, of course, it was one and the same: a few liters of soda and some plastic cups.  Is this a sign that family does not trust my cooking ability?  Or perhaps it's just because I have none.  Well this year I decided that it was time for a change- I was going to bring something edible- so I made these easy, yummy cheesecake stuffed strawberries which my youngest sister, Krista, said "were delicious!"  Here's what you need:

Ingredients:
1 pound of strawberries (the larger, the better)
8 oz. of cream cheese, softened
3 1/2 tablespoons of powdered sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Graham cracker crumbs
Chocolate chips

Directions:

Step 1: Wash and dry strawberries.  Using a paring knife, cut off the top of the strawberry and carve out the center so that it is hollow.  Do this to all of your strawberries and set aside (as shown in the photos above).

Step 2: In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla until creamy.  If you don't own a piping bag, like me, add cream cheese mixture into a Ziploc bag and snip off the corner in order to fill your strawberries.

Step 3: Fill your strawberries with the cream cheese.

Step 4: Once all of your strawberries are filled, sprinkle them lightly with the graham cracker crumbs.

Step 5: For a little something extra, melt some chocolate chips in the microwave for a minute, stir, and add chocolate to piping (or Ziploc) bag.  Top off your treat with some yummy chocolate stripes or swirls.

Step 6: Place your dessert into small cupcake papers for easy, mess-free servings.

These are so simple and make a great dessert.  The kids loved them too!  Hope you enjoy!

CINNAMON

I was talking with my sister in law the other day about cold remedies. She was recently sick and took cinnamon and honey. Her cold ended shortly thereafter. This got me thinking about cinnamon and its health benefits. So to the internet I went. Here is what I found and also some of my favorite cinnamon recipes and must buy beauty products:

No-Sew Felt Banners

A couple of weeks ago I made my daughter, Zoey, a little reading canopy for her bedroom.  As promised, I made a fun, colorful, no-sewing at all (woo hoo), felt banner to finish it off.

Here is what you will need:
  • 3 yards of ribbon (I used a thin, black, velvet ribbon)
  • 7 squares of felt (I used four different colors - hot pink, light pink, white and gray)
  • small tube of fabric glue

Instructions:
  • Cut out your 5" triangles (I used a cutting mat that you can get at any craft store but you can also just use a ruler and make your marks with a felt-tip pen)
  • Roll out all of your ribbon (front-side down)
  • Spread out the glue directly onto the ribbon
  • Place the triangle on top and press down
  • The triangles should be equal distances apart from each other (I used my cell phone as a spacer since it was the only thing handy at the time)

  • Let dry for 2 hours before you move it
My husband now calls me the 'Banner Queen' because once I made the first one, I made a bunch more.  They are so cute and take literally no time at all.

Other ideas:
  • Change up the ribbon so you have a little bit of a different look
This is the 2nd banner for Zoey's room, I used a little different black & white ribbon

I used a sparkly, red ribbon for this one
  • Use for everyday decor or think about the upcoming holidays
I can't wait to bring out all my decorations and incorporate this banner on my mantel

I also made a green and gray banner for the holidays...now, where to put it...
