As a kid, filling your Halloween bucket to the brim with chocolaty
sweets and sugary treats was the highlight of the Halloween experience. Yes, there was even a time when we upgraded
our plastic pumpkins to none other than good ol’ pillow cases. It was a challenge to see who would end up
with the most in their bag at the end of our trick-or-treating excursion. Now that I’m a mom and have a child of my own,
my perception of the sky-high mountain of candy has changed. I tend to look at it envisioning future dental
appointments, choking hazards, and hyperactivity from sugar overload. Instead of passing out candy this year, here
is a list of other items that are just as fun and cheap that kids will also enjoy:
- Pencils
- Pencil sharpeners
- Erasers
- Crayons
- Small coloring books
- Bubbles
- Stickers
- Bookmarks
- Small puzzles
- Finger puppets
- Rubber bracelets
- Stamps
- Tops
- Yo-yo
- Temporary tattoos
- Mini Play Doh
- Silly twisty straws
- Glow sticks or glow bracelets
- Spider rings
Places like the Dollar Tree Store, party supply stores, and websites like
www.orientaltrading.com sell these items for cheap and often in bulk. If you still want to pass out a treat, look
into healthier options such as cereal bars, trail mix, dried fruit snacks, mini
boxes of raisins, or pretzels.
If your child ends up with more candy than you’d like, there are
buy-back programs and events where dentists and organizations will take the
candy in exchange for toothbrushes, coupons, and sometimes cash. To look for a Buy-Back event in your
neighborhood, check out: http://www.halloweencandybuyback.com/
Happy Trick-or-Treating!
